Road trip March 5 (that will be our class)! Jim Cummins will be in Chicago on Thursday, March 5 at Connie's Pizza from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. The schedule is: 3:30 to 4:30 Browse materials, appetizers; 4:30 to 5:00 Dr. Jim Cummins presentation "ELL in Your Reading Classroom"; 5:00 to 6:00 Open discussion and Q&A with Dr. Cummins; Pizza and salad. I have rsvped for our class. Connie's Pizza is at 2373 S. Archer Avenue.
For preparation, I'd like you to read http://www.iteachilearn.com/cummins/converacademlangdisti.html, an article by Jim Cummins, and think about: what is the relationship of BICS to CALPS and, given that relationship, how do activities such as informal discussions, skits, drama, and writing, e.g., journal entries, about fine arts experiences assist students? Please post a response to this question before our class on March 12 above (click Discussion tab above).

Enrique's Journey
The book Enrique's Journey is Nazario's riveting story of one Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States. Nazario and Chicago's own Kotlowitz will discuss why story and narrative are so important in understanding immigration issues.

Facing History and Ourselves is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to helping educators and students engage in a study of the Holocaust and other examples of genocide to consider the connections between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives.

Facing History and Ourselves in partnership with the Chicago Public Library bring you an exploration of Sandra Cisneros' Chicago classic, House on Mango Street. In this after-school workshop, we will explore the way that identity, belonging and human behavior impact the main character's life, judgement, memory and willingness to participate in her community.
This workshop follows Sandra Cisneros' April 14th evening appearance at the Harold Washington Library - if you're interested in attending her talk please email program assistant Naomi Kane at naomi_kane@facing.org.
